Lightwyrm Tutorials
These tutorials are mostly on digital painting using Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter. They are designed for both beginners and intermediate artists that want to speed up their learning process. That being said, advanced artists might find them entertaining or, they might contain helpful reminders. If you want to get more in depth help from the authors, visit our discussion forums. Please post any tutorial suggestions on the forums aswell.
We attempt to update these tutorials once a week, on a Wednesday. But that doesn't always happen. If you have a tutorial you wish to submit, contact us.

When I'm designing characters or creatures, realistic or cartoony, I always think of proportions. Even when I do not think it will help much, I'll do it anyway just to see the result. I can always go back to my original if I don't think it works for the piece. A very easy way of doing this is by drawing characters in a silhouette form. No details - just a blob of shapes to pick and choose from. They're also great for designing poses, very quick and effective.
Proportions can also add a story or an idea of how the character will move or interact with others, or with the scene itself.

Today's tutorial is on the creation of "egg" (or whatever else I've called this picture before)
First up is the list of brushes I like to use:
Pencils>Cover Pencil
|
size 1.6 |
Erasers>Eraser
|
size varies throughout |
| Artist's Oils> Wet Oily Brush |
size varies |
| Artist's Oils> Grainy Blender |
size varies |
Artists>Impressionist
|
size varies |
Tinting>Basic Round
|
size varies |
I use the pencil for most sketch work, tinting for blocking in or experimenting with colour then move onto the wet oily brush for painting. In this piece I also made use of a custom fern brush which looked like fish bones to me :P and a fingerprint brush for added texture.

This is a basic painting tutorial in Photoshop CS3 on how I approach painting with a couple of easy steps.
1. Composition

Before I started this painting, I had to figure out where I was going to place my figure.
Since she is the focus of the painting, I did some basic shapes that flow into and towards her, with the aim of drawing the viewer's eyes towards her - they should see her at first glance.

This is a great new tutorial by David Tran, here you will learn how to quickly create depth and render the image in black and white. A very good skill for professional digital artists to have.
Below is the final image you will be creating.

A very large image is available to download at the bottom of the page.

In today's tutorial i'm going to go through my painting process for creating The Doubtful Inquisitor. I work exclusively with Corel Painter so this article and future articles may also function as Painter tutorials. Now onto the actual thing.
